Car accidents: Weather and other issues often factors

When motor vehicle collisions occur in Montana or anywhere, investigators often have to work for weeks to determine who or what may have caused a particular crash. Car accidents the result in fatalities are especially tragic. In fact, a recent report published the names of four victims who died in a two-car collision last month.

Investigators ultimately concluded that several factors likely caused the fatal crash. The roads that day were icy and wet, which often increases driving difficulty. Inexperienced drivers, in particular, often have trouble navigating slippery roadways, especially if a skid occurs. However, it is also believed that drugs and excessive driving speed were also causal issues in the collision.

The crash occurred when one of the vehicles was traveling westbound on a bridge but somehow veered across into the oncoming lane. Investigators say they think  the driver may have overcorrected after sliding on the wet and icy road. In addition to four fatalities, two other people were injured in the collision and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Car accidents like this one often send a ripple of grief through the families and communities of those involved. When driver negligence or recklessness is believed to have caused injury or death, the state allows recovering victims or immediate family members of decedents to seek financial recovery for their losses in court. If the person deemed responsible for damages did not survive the collision, a legal claim may be filed against his or her estate. A Montana personal injury law attorney can provide much needed guidance and support during the process.
