Study reports on leading causes of bicycle accidents

Recently, the National Transportation Safety Board released a study that focused on how to increase the safety of bicyclists. According to the report, the leading cause of bicycle accidents is motor vehicles overtaking those on bicycles. With the increased awareness to reduce harm to the environment and the desire to find enjoyable exercise, more and more Montana residents are taking up bicycle riding when possible.

According to the NTSB, the numbers of those killed in bicycle accidents has risen to levels that are comparable to those who die in marine-related and train accidents. In 2017, approximately 806 people died in collisions involving bicycles. Last year, the number rose to an estimated 857, which is the highest number of fatalities since 1990. There are some suggestions for measures that could help reduce the numbers of these fatal crashes.

It has been recommended that states establish separate bicycle lanes in order to increase safety for bicyclists. However, only four states have taken such measures. Many of the larger vehicles on the road also have larger blind spots in their mirrors, which raises the chances of collisions with bicyclists. Safety upgrades in these types of vehicles could help prevent deadly crashes.

One of the most effective steps may be to enact a blanket bicycle helmet law, which is supported by both lawmakers and bicycle safety advocates. Studies have confirmed that those who wear a helmet have a higher chance of surviving bicycle accidents. Other steps may include educating riders about following road rules and taking extra precautions when completing left-hand turns. Those who are seriously injured or have lost loved ones in a Montana accident typically sustain substantial financial losses in addition to physical injuries. An experienced attorney can provide guidance in seeking compensation for documented damages.
