How can you optimize your safety on a bicycle?

| Dec 30, 2020 | bicycle accidents

Riding your bicycle can provide hours of entertainment and serve as a reliable form of transportation. However, sharing the road with motorists can put your safety at risk, especially if you do not make an effort to protect yourself.

While you cannot control the actions of those around you, there are things you can do to increase your visibility and reduce your risk of getting in an accident.

Preparation makes a difference

Preparing to ride your bike is equally as important as your actions while riding. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, invest in a bike that comfortably fits your body and allows you to maintain confident control. If you have cargo to carry, secure everything neatly in a backpack or on your bike in a satchel designed for cargo.

Wear appropriate clothing to enhance your visibility to others. This could include a reflective vest and bright apparel. Your choice of clothing should also allow you to move freely and safely while operating your bike. A helmet may provide significant protection against serious injury and potentially save you from death if worn properly.

Awareness is protection

While you may always actively look for potential hazards to avoid them, other motorists may not even see you. Your effort to avoid distractions and remain vigilantly aware of your surroundings could make all the difference in your ability to recognize danger before it is too late. Practice extra caution when you need to cross the street, pass driveways or other points of exit and entry, and ride alongside traffic where there is no crosswalk to use.
