What Are Some Signs Of A Spinal Cord Injury?

After a recent truck crash, you may begin to feel aches and pains along your spine or even in your lower back.

These sensations may indicate that you are dealing with spinal cord injuries resulting from the accident.

Physical Problems

According to the Mayo Clinic, a sudden jolt or blow to your spine often results in long-lasting injuries to your spinal cord. If left untreated, these health issues tend to affect your body and mind, particularly when it comes to walking or sitting comfortably. Feeling signs of numbness in your arms or legs is one common symptom.

Your spinal cord is part of your central nervous system, which affects your nerve endings. If you find yourself struggling to breathe or losing control of your bowels, it may mean that your spine got hurt in the crash.

Sudden Complications

Although some people may feel the pain right away, adrenaline from a crash often masks notable symptoms for hours or days. This means you may not notice any injuries until after you return home, or you may not immediately seek help. If you notice any serious problems, such as bleeding or loss of feeling in your arms or legs, contact a medical professional as soon as possible.

Mental Issues

In some cases, you may find yourself feeling anxious or depressed. Since your brain may possibly be partly affected in a spinal cord injury, sudden mood swings could indicate something is wrong. The lingering pain can also take a toll on your mental health, since it impairs your ability to perform many basic tasks.
