What Complications Can Result From A Traumatic Brain Injury?

Montana readers of this blog know that a brain injury is one of the most potentially life-changing injuries an individual can suffer. An injury to the brain can result in complications that profoundly affect a person’s intellect, behavior and emotions. In a recent post in this blog we discussed some of the symptoms that may indicate a traumatic brain injury has occurred. This week we will take a look at some of the complications that can ensue in the aftermath of a brain injury.

A brain injury can result in altered states of consciousness including coma, a minimally conscious state or a vegetative state. Seizures, fluid buildup, nerve damage and infections can also occur.

Intellectual changes can include memory loss and problems with learning, reasoning and judgment. Problem-solving, multitasking and decision-making can become more difficult. Some patients experience difficulty starting or finishing tasks. Communication problems can include difficulty speaking, difficulty following conversations, and trouble organizing ideas and thoughts.

Behavioral changes following a brain injury can include problems with self-control, risky behavior, and physical or verbal outbursts. Emotional changes can include depression, anger, anxiety and loss of self-esteem. Brain injury victims can experience sensory problems including ringing in the ears, loss of coordination and vision problems. Victims can also be more prone to degenerative brain diseases.

If the wrongdoing or negligence of another person was the cause of a brain injury, the victim has rights in the civil justice system. The victim can sue the wrongdoer or negligent party for damages including pain and suffering, lost income, loss of enjoyment of life, and medical expenses.
