Distracted Driving Increasingly Common Across Montana, Nation

If you regularly drive down the road in Montana and see other motorists using their phones, eating or drinking, or otherwise engaging in distracted driving practices, you may have firsthand knowledge of just how severe the problem has become. At the Law Firm of Edmiston & Colston, we know that injuries and fatalities often result when drivers fail to follow the rules of the road, and we have helped many people who suffered injury in distracted driving-related accidents hold the appropriate parties accountable.

Per, nearly 90 percent of drivers nationwide believe that distracted driving is becoming increasingly widespread and problematic. Additionally, members of the Montana Highway Patrol agree, noting that distracted driving is even more dangerous when hazardous road conditions, such as wet or icy roads, are present, as is often the case in the state.

In a survey involving 2,613 motorists who have taken to the road within the past 30 days, 35 percent admitted to sending texts or other electronic communications, such as emails, within the past three years. Another 49 percent acknowledged using a handheld phone while driving within the same timeframe. While many consider cellphones some of the most distracting devices affecting today’s drivers, other technologies, such as smartwatches, are also likely contributing to the problem.

The Montana Highway Patrol recommends that motorists abstain from using technology and, if need be, rely on other passengers in the car to send messages or accept phone calls. While taking these steps can reduce your risk of a distracted driving-related accident to some extent, there is only so much you can do when others drive negligently. You can find more information about distracted driving accidents on our web page.
