How Road Rage Can Lead To Deadly Accidents

Anxiety affects many people in Montana and across the nation as the end of the year approaches. In some cases, this anxiety can result in problems on the road. While aggressive driving is present throughout the year, it can become more noticeable around the holidays.

People who become enraged while behind the wheel often display hazardous driving behaviors, which can put others lives at risk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, aggressive driving behaviors were involved in more than 56% of deadly motor vehicle accidents over a five-year period.

How Can You Spot A Driver With Road Rage?

If you are on the lookout for aggressive drivers, you may help prevent yourself or others from getting involved in an accident. You can start by looking for these hazardous driving behaviors:

  • Cutting off other drivers
  • Honking excessively, yelling or displaying obscene hand gestures
  • Blocking other drivers from switching lanes
  • Failing to yield to other drivers right of way, stop signs, traffic lights or pedestrian crosswalks
  • Speeding or racing other drivers
  • Tailgating or following too closely

Aggressive drivers may actually hit into other vehicles or leave their cars in an attempt to start an altercation with another driver. These encounters can become deadly, especially if the angry driver has a weapon.

What Can You Do?

While you may feel inclined to exchange words or interact with a driver who is posing a threat or acting in an aggressive manner, law enforcement officers urge motorists to avoid doing so. This may only aggravate the situation further. Instead, let the local law office know and allow them to handle the situation.
