Suspect Charged In Fatal Maryland Car Accident

  • On Behalf Of Colton Holm
  • Published: June 22, 2012

The Maryland driver involved in a fatal motorcycle-car accident earlier this month is now in custody at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility.

The accident occurred on Highway 10 in Laurel. The driver of the car allegedly fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. The victim, a motorcyclist, was found unresponsive and with no pulse. Police identified excessive speed as a contributing factor in the crash.

In a hit and run case like this, the surviving family of the victim is undoubtedly relieved that authorities have made an arrest. However, the criminal case will not help them as they face medical bills, funeral expenses and the loss of income that can follow from the sudden death of a loved one in an accident.

Montana law provides several sources of recovery for car and motorcycle accident victims and their families. When an accident is the fault of the other driver, the victim or family can bring a civil lawsuit to recover damages for loss of income, medical expenses, pain and suffering and other damages. In the case of a fatal accident, Montana’s wrongful death statute allows the family to sue not only for economic loss but for non-economic losses including care, comfort and companionship.

No family should have to face the painful and confusing aftermath of a car or motorcycle accident alone. An experienced personal injury attorney can help accident victims and their families negotiate the complexities of the law and hold negligent drivers accountable for their actions. An attorney can help survivors obtain the compensation they deserve.
