What Are Montana’s Bicycle Laws?

If you ride a bicycle in Montana, it is essential that you understand the laws regarding the use of bicycles on public roadways. Obeying the laws will not only keep you safe but also prevent you from being ticketed by law enforcement.

Bike Walk Montana notes that all motor vehicle road laws all apply to bicyclists. This is an important point to keep in mind because it means you must go with the flow of traffic and obey all road signals. This includes using hand signals when turning and stopping. If you fail to do so, you could be liable for any accidents you cause.

There are also laws specific to bicycles. For instance, you must ride to the extreme right of the roadway. You cannot carry packages or passengers unless your bicycle has the equipment to do so. Your bike must meet certain criteria, too. It needs to have functional brakes, a rear reflector and a headlight for when it is dark. If you will be riding in the dark, you must have a light on the back of your bike instead of just a reflector.

It is important to note that there is no bike helmet law in the state. Local laws also, for the most part, do not require helmets. However, it is recommended for safety that every bike rider wears a helmet, especially children. A helmet can offer protection when you fall from your bike and can prevent serious injury. This information is only intended to educate and should not be interpreted as legal advice.
